Information for Carers, Family & Friends

Got a question?

There are many common questions about mental health; however for urgent enquiries please contact your local GP.

How can I help a friend or relative who is experiencing a mental health problem?

There are a number of ways you can support friends or relatives who are struggling with mental health problems:

  • Let them know you're there and support them
  • Keep them focused on positive things and daily activities
  • Ask them what they feel would help, what wouldn't help and if they've experienced the symptoms before
  • Offer practical help like making a call to a GP, local service or support group

What can I do if it's an emergency?

If you or someone you know is experiencing an acute mental health crisis and might be a risk to themselves or someone else, see our ‘Get help’ button at the top of the page for immediate help.
