Information on the NHS Lanarkshire Perinatal Mental Health Service
The NHS Lanarkshire Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMHS) was launched in 2014. The primary purpose of this specialist service is to support existing provision in identifying and managing women with mental health problems in relation to childbearing, which we have defined as pregnancy and up to 12 months postnatal. We will also offer preconception advice for those women at risk.
Childbearing is a critical time in the lives of the mother, baby and her family and undetected/untreated maternal mental illness can lead to long term adverse outcomes for the whole family, including the father. Untreated illness in the mother can lead to psychological, social and educational difficulties in children as they get older.
Therefore a specialist perinatal mental health service can improve the health of mothers and their family by working with others when a mother is having a baby.
